“Pain is the business I am in,” Louise Bourgeois once said. We remember, and we live by the past, especially when justice remains unserved and loss becomes a constant companion. This project reflects the persistence of memory and the weight it carries. Centered on the resilience and strength of women, including members of my own family and participants in the Women, Life, Freedom movement in Iran, this body of work honors courage shaped through profound adversity. The work engages memory as something unstable and enduring, formed through the entanglement of personal and collective histories. Past and present surface together, revealing how lived experience continues to shape perception, identity, and emotional life. The figures hold vulnerability, resilience, and connection, carrying stories shaped by recent protests in Iran, displacement, and longer histories of silence and resistance. Abstract forms, layered color, and intentional distortion shape a visual language that mirrors lived memory rather than fixed recall. These images function as both witness and archive, making space for what is often unspoken and difficult to hold. Rather than offering resolution, the work insists on presence, holding memory as something lived, ongoing, and inseparable from the act of seeing.
